About this Adventurista

Abu Sir, Egypt.

Chaucilla Cemetary, Peru.

I love adventure, exploring the world, and anything that is 2,000+ years old.  If it’s ancient, on the other side of the world or on a mountain it speaks to me. I love a good story, especially when I can be part of it. Whether it’s bartering for 1,000 year-old clay bead necklaces in a Mozambique souk, or riding in a giant beat-up jeep through the Black Desert of Egypt while the driver blasts Metallica, or watching the sun rise over the peaks and ice fields of Patagonia, or even getting lost in the labyrinth of passages in Angkor Wat.

I first fell in love with ancient Egypt and archaeology when I just a wee thing of about 8 or 9.  I found my parent’s travel books from their trip to Egypt (pre-Me), devoured them and then wanted to go to the library to find more.  Ever since then I’ve been studying archaeology and Egyptology, whether on my own or in school.  I graduated from the University of Washington in 2006 with a BA in Archaeology (emphasis in Egyptology and Zooarchaeology, specifically human remains) and a BS in Biology.  When I was 13, I learned that I could study abroad; deciding I would spend my junior year of college living in Egypt and studying Egyptology at the American University in Cairo.  Upon graduating college I moved to Dublin, Ireland for 4 months (beginning of 2007) to intern at the National Museum of Ireland working for the Head of Irish Antiquities, Eamonn (Ned) Kelly. I also spent a few quarters in college working at the Burke Museum (for credit), located in Seattle.  I worked on everything from caring for their Greco-Roman Egyptian Mummy, to caring for Australian Petroglyphs, to performing zooarchaeological bone identifications on a bone assemblage from a Washington archaeology site.

I also love helping people travel, sharing my stories and sharing in their adventures.  On this site I hope to both share my crazy travel adventures, provide travel tips and advice for the countries and places I’ve visited and inspire everyone to get out and travel – no matter how far or close to home.

Holding a Viking Broadsword

At the moment I attend archaeology lectures and conferences, travel the world, mountaineer, ice and rock climb, ski, work to fund the things I love and blog about my adventures.  This site is dedicated to my archaeology and travel adventures and stories; travel tips, advice and inspiration; recent archaeology discoveries; and archaeology lectures and conferences.

For my mountaineering, ice climbing, rock climbing, mixed climbing and skiing adventures, stories, gear reviews, and trip reports check out my climbing blog: Ice Bella.

Feel free to leave me any feedback, comments, suggestions, or just say hi on this blog or via e-mail at gshathaway@gmail.com.

Keep those inner adventurous and creative fires burning bright!
